Externally coated anti-static additives are products that are applied to the outer surface of a polymer to provide short or medium term anti-static protection. They are often used when internal permanent or migrating additives are not suitable due to clarity, cost or polymer compatibility.
Externally coated additives work in a similar way to migrating internal additives in that they interact with atmospheric moisture to reduce the surface resistivity and hence dissipate electric charge to provide an anti-static effect to the plastic part.
Externally coated additives can be dissolved in an appropriate solvent at low concentrations before being coated on the surface of the plastic part. The additive can be applied by using spray, roll or dip coatings processes, typically at addition levels between 2 – 5 %. Quantities used depend upon surface area, typical requirements range from 50 – 100 mg/m2 of active Atmer additive.
