Short and medium/ long term anti-static additives can also be known as migrating anti-static additives and are sold under the Atmer brand name. They can be added to plastics as a masterbatch or compounding or directly during extrusion to reduce electrostatic attraction in polymers.
Short and medium/ long term additives work by migrating through the polymer matrix towards to surface as it cools. At the surface they pick up moisture from the atmosphere, resulting in reduce static build up in the plastic.
Atmer short and medium/ long term anti-static additives are perfect for use in food and cosmetic packaging and some medical applications, where anti-static performance is required for up to 12 months. They have many benefits including:
•No adverse effect on clarity or mechanical properties
Amine-free anti-static additives have many limitations including regulatory issues when used in food contact or medical grade plastics and, because of this, amine-free anti-static solutions are often preferred. GMS 90 is a commonly used amine-free anti-stat, however, the performance of this product tails off meaning it only suitable for when short-term performance is needed.
